To work on a new mmorpg project.

Why ?

Well, first off most mmorpg's out there are in fact endless and boring clones of each other. Sure, we all read it on a million forums, and we all agreed on it a million times, but someone has to try and do something about it.

Starting a project from scratch and with no fat-cat suit looking over the shoulder is probably the only way left to ever get an idea to see the light of day, as things are today.

What ?

Nothing very fancy, graphics wise. An isometric 2d gfx system will be more than enough to start with. The concept is, if we manage to build what we intend, ie a fresh rpg full of valuable new ideas, it doesnt take more than a basic graphics interface to make the point. After that, we can have it re-released, sold, licensed, whatver we think right.

How ?

Nobody is getting paid, everybody is getting stock. If/when we manage to get a team together, we will spend as long as it takes defining the tasks, and according points for the [correct] completion of each task. Any money ever made in any way from this project will then be split according to the points anyone holds.

Who ?

Well, i want You

drop me a mail at asdf116k@yahoo.com if you would be interested to join, stating at the minimum

how much time a week you think you could offer, and for how long an interval
what areas you have experience in (include any [relevant] references, if any) and you would be interested to work in
please be a legal adult.

(understand that emailing me does not obligate either in any way, we can just talk about it, i dont belive in slavery, you have to WANT to be doing what you get to be doing)

thank you.

i would suggest that you firstly set up a full an quallified website, its cheap enough, and you will need better email services than @yahoo @hotmail etc etc.

if nothing else you can goto sourceforge.net which is probably your best real bet here.

look up some of the people who have tried to set up an MMO without any of the major derriere humping companies that fore programmers to make a game when they want it and how they want it, start at <a href='http://www.pharaoh-productions.com/' target='_blank'>http://www.pharaoh-productions.com/</a> and look for the comments from david allen about the players in the computer game industry, hes very jaded lol but he does seem to have a clue <!--emo&:P-->Image<!--endemo-->

almost all of the groundbreaking MMOs that have actually come to my attention have died for one reason or another... while not trying to purposly rain on your parade you should take a look at these examine why they failed and come up with at least a working solution to these problems failing that you should at least be able to see that some things just cannot be done.

make yourself a furum somewhere to craete a community, from that community is bount to come several people who have the abilities you are looking for <!--emo&:)-->Image<!--endemo-->

its illegal to give out/sell/produce fake stock of any sort.. so when you offer stock.. not only do they have to be real but you have to go through all of the procedures to make to sure share holders arnt being conned..

so id either re word your post or ensure you stick to your word. <!--emo&<_<-->Image<!--endemo-->

What language are you writing this in?

Ive been working on a couple of MMORPG for a long time some of which have fallen by the wayside and died, others which are ongoing and have a pretty big codebase. However in terms of a "Team" I find the big problem is working with other people, best off just working on your own as you seem to be able to get more done.

If you work with non-programmers they have no concept whatsoever of how difficult something they feel is simple would be to put into a game. People who play alot of games are even worse as they come up with the most complex designs in the world expecting you to be able to write it. So if you have a bunch of people doing the ideas its a royal pain in the arse trying to hack these ideas into actual code.

My advice to you would be to get a team AFTER you have built the framework. Have a working example of Client and Server Code, run a small prototype, etc. Then look for a team based on what you have done and where you feel you need help.

flash/web design - i'll make you a site if you want... I'd host it on my own computer for you so i can use mysql4/php5 but over here in new zealand we use dynamic ip addresses, i'd need static.

3d design... with relatively bad animation <!--emo&:P-->Image<!--endemo-->

i'll make you some sprites, then you tell me what you think and if you want me there.

depends what you want.

example of a website made by me, not my best work but its something. <a href='http://downandout.atspace.com' target='_blank'>http://downandout.atspace.com</a>

yo yo folks <!--emo&:)-->Image<!--endemo--> nice to see how strong this community really is.

lestat baby, i hope you wont want to be paid in lf orbs ?

WS, hello <!--emo&:)-->Image<!--endemo--> ty for the head-ups. i only had the time to start with a fun project recently, so this officially exists since yesterday. but im dedicated, i have been doing tons of reading on the net, your suggestions go in the pile, ty.

forum is being worked on, will be up tomorrow or monday. ill love to see you all there <!--emo&:)-->Image<!--endemo-->

topkapea, i see you're the same nitpicker as i recall you were. to clarify :

i didnt mean stock in the business sense of the word. we arent going to be listed on nyse, not just yet.

i ment it colloquially, as a shorthand way to explain what i mean.

note that people starting a common project can legally agree how to divide IP rights derived from their common work. which is what i ment by "stock". notice how i really call it "points" mostly.

jerms, i will keep you in mind, im sure something or other will need done <!--emo&:)-->Image<!--endemo--> email me please.

egg, im not adamant on any particular language, we will have to discuss all this team wise, maybe some bits will be perl and others c, maybe all c, heck, maybe all pascal if the only decent coder we get only writes pascal. or whatever else, as long as it is reasonably feasible.

im the guy with the idea, pretty much. and i have reasonable appreciation of what cant be done, and what can be done, and how difficultly, more or less. and if i dont, i can be told (i usually understand by the third pass <!--emo&:D-->Image<!--endemo--> )

ofcourse, teams are harder to handle than yourself, but i am pretty sure we can all have loads of fun completing this project, really. teams dont have to be a screaming match, or an exercise in absurd theatre and misscomunications. they can actually be fun. but time will show that, i suppose.

thanks again for the attention, and everybody who didnt email me but is interested, please do so i can at least keep you updated.

I have to say that none of that made any business sense. Also starting a post with "Yo Yo" is probably a bad idea. If you want to write an MMO, just write your own. It can't be that hard, its just an internet database with graphics. If you want 2D, just write a non graphical game, then an isometric engine in about 20 minutes. I would imagine that if you had been programming for 10 years, you could write a game like astonia fairly quickly. The hardest part would be the new ideas...

It can also be a fun thing Shade, here's a render of the face of a model i've been working on Shade:

<a href='http://www.ihostphotos.com/show.php?id=51790' target='_blank'>http://www.ihostphotos.com/show.php?id=51790</a>

I'm not really in it for "business" - yet if it flows that way, then all is fine with me.

Theres a little bit more to it than that.

Sorry, I should have included: I would assume the hardest part... as I don't know personally.
